* The Kansas City Association of Black Journalists began in 1981 to strengthen ties among African-American professionals in journalism. The organization continues to tackle other issues such as sensitizing the media to better race relations in news coverage; improving employment practices; expanding media coverage to include the full spectrum of this community's racial and ethnic diversity; ensuring balance and fairness in reporting; working with high schools and colleges to identify, encourage and guide potential black journalists by assisting in recruiting activities; recruiting black journalists for teaching positions at area colleges; and preparing black journalists for managerial and supervisory positions in the media.
The KCABJ Media Awards further our goal of ensuring that African
Americans and other people of color are the focus of enterprise stories in the
Greater Kansas City print and broadcast media. Past KCABJ Media Awards
recipients include PitchWeekly, Kansas City Business Journal, The Kansas City
Star, KCTV-5, KCUR-FM, The Kansas City Globe, The National Catholic Reporter,
KPRS-FM, WDAF-TV, Channel 4, Odegard Outdoor Advertising, KSHB-TV, Channel 41,
